EU sets timetables for ICT input on energy efficiency

In a communication and recommendation published on 12 March, the European Commission sets out clearer goals for the information and communication technologies (ICT) sector to contribute to improving energy efficiency and reducing emissions. Whilst acknowledging the role of the ICT sector as a "powerhouse" for innovation, it now places a "unique" responsibility and capacity on the sector in the move towards a low carbon era.rnThe Commission recommends a series of ICT actions so as to achieve the EU's 2020 energy efficiency targets. The focus is on what can be achieved in the short term in terms of wider energy efficiency objectives. The Commission further foresees a review, in 2011, of the extent to which recommendations have been taken up by stakeholders. No obligatory measures are being proposed.
