Three-year Erika Iii Talks Wrap Up

As announced in our previous edition, a conciliation agreement between the Council of Ministers and the European Parliament on the Erika III package, intended to improve the safety of maritime transport, was sealed during the night of 8-9 December (see box). From a technical point of view, the agreement relates to five of the seven proposals of the package (five proposals that will be transformed into six legislative texts, the initial proposal on classification societies having been divided into two texts), but the two institutions certainly agreed on the whole package. The Parliament promised not to touch the common positions on the last two texts, which the Transport Council adopted, on 9 December, in accordance with the agreement that had been obtained at ministerial level, in October.
