Rules Eased On Public Financing For Companies

It will soon be easier for the member states to grant public aid of up to €500,000 to companies affected by the credit crunch resulting from today's financial crisis. Only general schemes will have to be approved by the European Commission, not the individual aid packages granted under such schemes. This is the main provision of the 'temporary framework' adopted by the Commission, on 17 December, concerning EC Treaty rules on state aid. The measures allowed under the framework will apply immediately but expire at the end of 2010, by which time it is hoped that the effects of the current crisis will have subsided.
