Environmental organisations criticise EU target

The binding Community target, under which member states are required to source 10% of transport energy from renewable sources by 2020, "will require up to 69,000 square kilometres (6.9 mil lion hectares) of new land worldwide and make climate change worse," asserts a study commissioned by nine organisations (Greenpeace, ActionAid, Birdlife Inter national, ClientEarth, European Envi ronment, FERN, Friends of the Earth Europe, Transport and Environment and Wetland International).
