Commission proposal garners mixed reactions

The European Commission proposed, or 3 November, a Council directive, under the Euratom Treaty, governing the disposal oi spent fuel and radioactive waste from nucleai power plants as well as from medicine oi research. The directive, if all goes well, could enter into force in 2015. Justifying its pro-rnposal, the Commission points out that interim storage is not a long-tenn solution due to the need for continuous maintenance and oversight. This despite the majority of highly radioactive waste today being placed in interim storage.
