Council aims to boost R&D on Galileo applications

The Council of Transport Ministers, meeting in Luxembourg on 15 October, asked the European Commission to look into how to improve funding for research and development of applications for Galileo, the future European satellite navigation system, and its predecessor EGNOS (European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service). It recommended the redeployment of funds, "if necessary," within the ceilings of the EU's current multiannual financial framework. The Council's aim is to encourage the worldwide development of applications based on Galileo and EGNOS. It invited the Commission and the European Investment Bank (EIB) to explore the creation of a risk capital fund to support small and medium-sized enterprises in the area of satellite navigation.
