Spanish power companies fight coal state aid

Spanish power companies Endesa, Iber-drola and Gas Natural Fenosa have filed cases against the European Commission at the EU Court of Justice. The three electricity giants want annuled the Commission's decision to approve a state aid scheme for the coal sector in Spain. Under the Madrid governments scheme, a sum of around €800 million in subsidies, running till 31 December 2014 at the latest, would help clear a considerable backlog of stockpiled Spanish coal.rnThe cases against the Commission were filed on 14 October by Gas Natural Fenosa (T-484/10), Iberdrola (T-486/10) and Endesa (T-490/10). The court notes that it would probably take around 18 months to two years before a hearing, depending on the complexity of the case.
