EP committee raises target for collection

The collection and treatment of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) needs to be improved, say members of the European Parliament's Committee on Environment (ENVI), who recommend raising the target for collection of such waste to 85% by 2016.rnWith its adoption, on 22 June at first reading (co-decision), of a report by Karl-Heinz Florenz (EPP, Germany), the committee stressed the need for tightening up legislation by extending collection obligations to all types of products (apart from a few clearly specified exemptions) and ensuring that municipalities have the resources needed to collect and process this waste.
