摘要

Nearly 60% of European consumers' seafood needs are met by imports from non-EU countries. Fisheries and aquaculture are nevertheless two strategic sectors of activity that cannot be left to market forces alone, notes the European Parliament's Committee on Fisheries (PECH). With its unanimous adoption, on 22 June, of a report by Vice-Chair Alain Cadec (EPP, France), the committee asks that the same quality and sustainability requirements be applied to European products and imports. More generally, MEPs call for an urgent revision of the common organisation of the market for fishery and aquaculture products (one of the pillars of the future reform of the Common Fisheries Policy) so as to ensure the sector's viability and market stability and to increase the added value of European products.
