The European Parliament's Committee on Environment (ENVI) backs the intervention of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) in the process of evaluating and authorising biocidal products. With its adoption by a very large majority (48 to five, and six abstentions) of a report by Christa Klass (EPP, Germany) on the draft regulation on the placing on the market of biocidal products, the committee stresses the need to reduce the length and cost of evaluation procedures, to ensure equal treatment for products manufactured and processed in the EU and imported products, and to align the regulation's provisions with REACH (registration, evaluation, and authorisation of chemical substances).
