Fisheries: EP to assert its rights

The Lisbon Treaty, which came into force on 1 December 2009, places the Common Fisheries Policy (except for the setting of annual quotas) under co-decision (Article 37). Although international negotiations are still a shared competence, the new rules imply that Parliament and the Council are on an equal footing. Co-decision and effective participation in meetings of the regional advisory councils (CFP management) and joint committees (international agreements) are among the new powers that Parliament, and in particular its Fisheries Committee (PECH), plan to use to the full.
