Two chapters closed for Zagreb, one opened for Ankara

Croatia and Turkey have taken another small step on the long road to EU membership with Coreper's decision, on 17 December, to close another two chapters of the talks (right of establishment and freedom to provide services, on the one hand, and social and employment policy, on the other) with Zagreb and to open one (environment) with Ankara. Two accession conferences were held for this purpose, on 21 December 2009, at foreign minister level.rnFor Croatia, 28 of the 33 negotiation chapters will now be open and 17 closed. The Swedish EU Presidency was not able to open the five remaining chapters, as it had hoped.
