Commission proposes to increase TACs for anchovies

The European Commission proposed, on 8 July, to increase, for the fishing year running from 1 July 2011 to 30 June 2012, fishing opportunities for anchovies in the Bay of Biscay (ICES Zone VIII)1. Based on recent scientific advice confirming the sound state of the stock, which is above safe biological limits, the Commission proposes to set total allowable catches (TACs) at 29,700 tonnes. Spain and France are the only member states that operate in this fishery. The stock is estimated at around 98,450 tonnes, a figure that still has to be confirmed by relevant scientific bodies.
