Policy action needed on smart power demand, says industry group

The newly formed industry group Smart Energy Demand Coalition (SEDC) has presented a policy paper aimed at pushing smart demand side measures at European level. SEDC argues that billions are being spent on the development and roll-out of a variety of smart grid technologies throughout Europe. However, smart grid success is heavily dependent on the ability to make energy demand 'smart'. "On estimate over 10% of the electric power infrastructure has been constructed in order to meet peaks in electricity demand that occur less than 1% of the time," noted Marko Svetina, CEO of the European Demand Response Research Center, one of the members of SEDC.
