The EU's environment ministers have reaffirmed their commitment to reducing the use of mercury, with a view to eventually ceasing its production altogether. In conclusions adopted on 14 March1, ministers highlighted the important progress that has been made in this area in recent years, with several legislative texts adopted since 2005. The Council emphasised the need to protect the environment and human health from the toxic effects of mercury and its components.
