摘要

Agreement exists on the principle but not yet on the method: this is the conclusion reached at the end of an informal working session, on 1 March in Brussels, by Fisheries Commissioner Maria Damanaki. The meeting with representatives of member states and of the European Parliament addressed the touchy issue of discards. The commissioner denounced this practice and confirmed her determination to ban discards at sea over the longer term. She noted that "discards are not ethical and represent a waste of natural resources and of fishermen's efforts".
