Exec asks member states to back 2010 GM cultivation proposal

After a few months of consultations behind closed doors with the member states, the European Commission has renewed its push to renationalise decision making over GMO crop cultivation in the hope of breaking the current deadlock. To this end, the College of Commissioners asked, on 6 November, the Lithuanian Presidency to put back on the Council's table its 2010 proposal that gives member states the freedom to decide if they want to grow authorised GMOs on their territory. At the same time, the Commission asked the member states to authorise GM maize 1507 for cultivation on EU territory. If approved, this maize - manufactured by DuPont Pioneer and resistant to certain herbicides and pests, such as corn borer - will become the third GM crop after Monsanto's MON810 maize and BASF's Amflora potato to be authorised in the EU.
