Commission wants stricter rules on organic farming

The organic sector in the EU has rapidly developed over the past decade, and thus the European Commission decided to table a proposal for a regulation on the farming and labelling of organic products that aims to align EU legislation with the new reality on the ground. Presenting the proposal to the agriculture ministers at their Council meeting, on 24 March, Agriculture Commissioner Dacian Ciolos underlined that organic farming is not a niche market anymore. He pointed to the fact that in 2011 almost ten million hectares were cultivated in the EU as organic - nearly two times more than in 2002 (5.6 million hectares).
