MEPs want Council to reject proposal for approval of GM maize 1507

Having no formal say in the GMO authorisation process, MEPs have made a joint cross-party attempt to put pressure on the member states to reject the European Commission's proposal for the authorisation of the first genetically modified (GM) food crop, Pioneer-DuPont's maize 1507, for cultivation in the EU. In a non-binding resolution, adopted on 16 January in Strasbourg with 385 votes in favour and 201 against, the European Parliament has called on the European Commission to put on hold the whole authorisation process for GMOs until the current "risk assessment methods have been significantly improved".
