This collection is part of Ashgate's impressive series on Transport and Society. Its editors present both theoretically and empirically focused pieces and their aim is to develop an intellectual agenda uniting transportation research with social theory. Accordingly, John Urry and Ulrich Beck discuss the New Mobilities and Cosmopolitan paradigms, which provide distinctive ways to theorise contemporary changes in mobility and movement. Urry challenges the claim that the New Mobilities paradigm cither celebrates or overstates mobility, while Beck argues for the need to focus on how places, far from becoming less important, are being redesigned and reconceptual-ised.
