A solution to the equilibrium problem for masonry-like bodies subject to parallel loads

A solution to the equilibrium problem of a two-dimensional body which does not support tension is determined for the case where all external forces are parallel to a fixed direction. The procedure is based on the decomposition of the body into a one-parameter family of self-equilibrated one-dimensional subbodies, for each of which an elastic solution with non-positive stress is assumed to exist. From the known collection of solutions for the subbodies a solution for the entire body is then constructed using regularity hypotheses for the external forces.
