Big agricultural land deals are controversial. For the past 5 years, foreign large-scale land acquisitions, especially in Africa, have been featuring in international news headlines, stimulating intensely heated debates among many stakeholders, including farmers' advocacy groups, development organizations, the global investment community and national governments. Despite the rapidly emerging literature, accurate information and well-documented empirical cases on this phenomenon remains limited. In particular, the water resource dimension of land acquisitions is still not clearly understood.
