Supervisory Control Theory aims to derive methods for synthesizing control mechanisms for discrete event systems (DES) such that the resulting closed-loop system behavior must be constrained to stay within limits imposed by specifications. The quality of a supervisor is in general measured by its degree of permissiveness while guaranteeing the controlled system not to generate blocking trajectories. The computational complexity of the synthesis procedure, due to state space explosion, and the illegibility of large resulting supervisors are the main barriers to the use of this theory in realistic industrial applications. In their paper, Gaudin and Marchand explore two particular DES architectures in order to propose solutions for the supervisor control problem that could overcome these difficulties.
