Christian Vandendorpe, From Papyrus to Hypertext

This English translation of a book first published in 1999 takes the form of a series of short pieces on the consequences of digitalization for the character of the text. The author argues for hypertext as a new medium of communication. His concern is with the ways in which technologies of reading affect the experience of reading and the cognitive processes that are involved. Reading a hypertext is obviously quite different to reading a book, which means that reading Vandendorpe is to read of new forms of text and textuahty via an old vehicle of communication, albeit one that was put together using a hypertext writing tool that was only transferred into a word-processing programme in the final stage of writing.
