In this collection of essays, freedom and prejudice are set up as mutually opposed to each other, on the grounds that prejudices involve judgements made as a result of inaccurate knowledge or in the face of accurate knowledge. Freedom of communication is held to counter this because it exposes people to arguments about false beliefs and provides a forum for the exchange of ideas. While these assumptions underlying the volume as a whole may stand in need of elaboration and qualification, they are reasonable starting points. The editors, Suheyla Kirca Schroeder and LuEtt Hanson, divide the book into three parts, dealing with freedom of expression and the public sphere, encounters and confrontations, and the themes of receiving/percdving/presenting/represenring.
