The metaphor of the voice has long held sway as a way of referring to what it is that is supposedly represented in a popular democracy. In this book, Jeffrey Edward Green argues for a different figure of speech, with visual perception being a better way of conceiving of popular empowerment. The focus on voice is for Green too narrow as well as ill-fitting for forms of political life in which the ordinary citizen is not so much a vocal force as an active spectator of those who have been voted into office. We relate to politics with our eyes, and Green's purpose is to re-examine democratic ideals in the light of this.
