The e46 BMW 3 Series is only one of the best, most perfect cars in the world. Really, how many people absolutely need anything bigger or sportier or more luxurious or more practical? Following on from the third-generation e36 model, the e46 did that "mission creep" thing that affects most cars: It became larger and softer. But starting from a baseline of the previous model-which was truly compact, kind of plain inside, and almost obsessive compulsive about its driving abilities-it's still amazing to drive, thanks in part to a perfect 50:50 weight distribution and BMW's mastery of all things suspension-related and engine-related. Speaking of the suspension, it uses many aluminum components, taking a page from the 5 Series. And all-wheel drive was available, denoted by the "x" suffix.
