摘要

The heterogeneity of the coastal zone in physical, chemical, biological and human dimensions means an extensive matrix of natural ecosystems and habitats, a region of significance and complexity for biogeochemical transformation, and a multiplicity of human uses and benefits. This presents simultaneous challenges to measurement, to modelling and to management. In the mid 1990's the ELOISE cluster of European Land-Ocean Interaction Studies was set up to enlist European coastal zone research competence in the task, and sought to facilitate communication and integration between coastal zone research projects, and with end-users, stakeholders and society at large. The main goal of ELOISE has been to develop a coherent European coastal zone research of high scientific value and relevance to human society. As such, it constitutes the European contribution to the IGBP Land-Ocean Interactions in the Coastal Zone (LOICZ project). ELOISE research is carried out in more than 60 projects dealing with the most important subjects in the European coastal zone, such as human impact on coastal seas through pollution, eutrophication, and physical disturbance, significance of coastal seas in global change with emphasis on origin and fate of organic matter, nutrients, trace elements, sediments and biogases, and the relationship between socio-economic development and coastal seas with focus on a strategic approach to the management of sustainable coastal zone resource use and development.
