Black mayonnaise as a climate ad

The photographs of Laura McPhee do not immediately make it clear what the Gateway National Recreation Area really looks like, and on the maps it appears more like a number of 'green' spots around Low Bay, south of JFK Airport. Within this leisure-time area there are the salt marshes of Jamaica Bay, the Ecology Village in Floyd Ben-net Field, the beaches of Sandy Hook, Fort Wadsworth, besides a great deal of water- but also: four water treatment plants, thirty sewer overflows, outstretched runways, a network of bridges and freeways, and patches of ground covered in 'black mayonnaise' due to millions of gallons of oil pollution.
