Changsha Sunshine 100 Guojixincheng

The landscape for Changsha New City in Hunan province was drawn by Kragh-Berglund landscape architects (K&B) for the Chinese developer Sunshine 100. Changsha New City illustrates a typical project in a Chinese context, operating within a framework of economic constraints where ecological dimensions have to be inventively created by addressing the given requirements and limitations. China's visible environmental degradation stresses the importance of implementing ecological solutions, which become viable if they also have an economic potential. Here landscape is the key, since it caters for the creation of affordable environmental solutions with multifunctional uses. K&B mention meeting a great openness to new ideas in their work in China, which encourages experimentation. The landscape design for Changsha has been carried out from the conceptual to the detailed design, and a part of the project's first phase is now being built. The main landscape elements in the Changsha project consist of a lake with a public promenade, an entrance area with water-cleaning basins, courtyard gardens and a botanical street.
