This section of the map presents a reasonably comprehensive image of Lisbon shortly after the beginning of the 20th century. The central part of the city shown here, consists of an area of about 3 x 2.5 kilometres. In those days, the only urban region of some size directly connecting to Lisbon was Belem, outside of the map to the left, a few kilometres in a westerly direction along the coast.
