Every age has its fashions. In the 1959s, we were seduced by the new machine metaphors provided by communication theory and cybernetics. In the 1960s, we redefined large parts of psychology as the study of information-processing and looked to the burgeoning world of computers for our inspiration. The 1970s saw both the rebirth of the schema concept and an exodus from the increas- ingly sterile laboratory. In the 1980s, we fell in love with all things 'cognitive' and created a flurry of 'new' disciplines- cognitive science, cognitive ergonomics and, of course, cognitive engineering (CE). However, in the 1990s, many ergonomists have come to appreciate that there is a good deal more to the study of human work than the interac- tion between human cognition and comuters. theory and cybernetics.
