摘要

We are told in the Preface that even within the field of audition, higher order auditory processes have received less study than such lower-level processes as loudness and pitch perception. Really? The book classifies hearing as "the neglected sense". I wonder if a better description would be the "less prominent sense" in the field of research. The book also states at the outset that although we engage in auditory processing throughout our lives, many may fail to appreciate that the seemingly automatic task of auditory processing often involves considerable mental effort to accomplish. Perhaps the layman may fail to appreciate this but I doubt if this book is aimed at them. It is likely that any student of psychology or psychology professional is likely to be fully aware of this fact. So who is this book aimed at and what is it trying to achieve?
