Automated environmental laboratory unveiled at Los Alamos

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) unveiled in August a fully automated environmental laboratory system designed to reduce the cost of analyzing large numbers of samples by EPA methods. The demonstration laboratory, labeled the Contaminant Analysis Automation (CAA) system, consists of interchangeable modules for tasks such as weighing and filtration interconnected by robotic arms. SciBus Analytical Inc. (Sunnyvale, CA) will market the modules under a five-year, $66 million shared cost cooperative research and development agreement with the Department of Energy (DOE).
