An indigenous bacterium, Bacillus mannanilyticus strain AVS from an acclimated mixed bacterial culture was screened to biotransform a triphenylmethane dye; methyl violet (MV). The strain was acclimated to MV structure and thus, the cells exhibited an average decolorization rate (ADR) of 69.44 μg min~(-1) with simultaneous reduction in chemical oxygen demand (COD) level (94%) when incubated for 24 b under static condition. The inducible extracellular oxidoreductases catalyzed MV biotransformation and produced metabolites which were devoid of chlorine. The phytotoxicity assays assessed the toxicity of the biotrans-formed products. This is the first report on TPM dye degradation and mineralization using B. mannanilyticus strain AVS.
