Preface

Interest in urban air pollution continues to grow in the research community and in the wider public domain. The increased research activity in the field has been reflected in the considerable growth in the number of papers presented at the fifth International Conference on Urban Air Quality (UAQ). It has built upon the previous meetings held at the University of Hertfordshire, UK (1996), Technical University of Madrid (1999), Loutraki, Greece (2001) and Charles University, Prague (2003). As before the conferences aim to provide a forum for scientists, engineers and decision and policy makers to discuss the latest developments in urban air quality research. It is encouraging to note how the UAQ conferences have stimulated international collaboration between researchers. Examples of this process include joint meetings hosted by the Cluster of European Air Quality Research (CLEAR), ACCENT (FP6 Network of Excellence) and PICADA (FP5 project), which together represent a large part of the wider EU supported air pollution research community. The organisers also welcomed the participation of COST Actions on urban meteorology and air pollution (715), mesoscale modelling for air pollution applications (728), and quality assurance of microscale models (732).
