Trailer Maker Talks About Formaldehyde

In a hearing of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Affairs, representatives of companies that manufactured trailers used to temporarily house victims of the Gulf Coast hurricanes gave their side of the story about formaldehyde levels in trailer indoor air, which has allegedly sickened some occupants. In testimony, Jim Shea, chairman of Gulf Stream Coach, Inc., said his company provided the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) with 50,000 trailers for displaced Gulf residents. Shea noted that formaldehyde is not purchased or used directly in the production of travel trailers. Rather, formaldehyde is usually present in small amounts in materials used in the manufacture of trailers.
