At the request of Congress, EPA will issue the first part of a two-part research report on the relationship between hydraulic fracturing and drinking water in 2012. How EPA intends to obtain and assess relevant data both for that report and for a follow-up report in 2014 is charted out in detail in a study plan just released by the Agency. In the plan, EPA says it will attempt to determine the validity of cases in which the environmental community and others claim hydraulic fracturing has contaminated underground sources of drinking water. The longer-term portion of the study will look at the condition of groundwa-ter at sites before, during, and after hydraulic fracturing has occurred.
