CAFO Pleads Guilty A large egg producer in Ohio pled guilty to illegally discharging egg wash water into a tributary of a creek in Marseilles. The facility is a concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO) that houses approximately 3 million egg-laying chickens. The producer will pay a $150,000 penalty. EPA alleges that a contractor for the company directed a crew to overapply wastewater onto the field through the night and into the next morning on one occasion. As a result of the overapplication, says EPA, the wastewater flowed off the field, through a series of drainage tiles, into a tributary and subsequently into a creek. Hefty Fine for Lax Reporting A global manufacturer and supplier of steel pipe products for the oil and energy industry recently agreed to pay $717,324 of civil penalties to settle violations of environmental regulations at seven facilities related to the public reporting of toxic chemicals at its facilities in Louisiana, Texas, and Arkansas.
