NEW YORK Electronic Waste Disposal Ban Deadlines

January 1, 2012, is an important date in connection with the disposal ban requirements of the Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act, Section 27-2611 (the Act). This is the date by which electronic equipment covered by the Act may no longer be accepted for disposal at a solid waste or hazardous waste management facility from any person other than an individual or household consumer. It is also the date that begins the obligation of a solid waste management facility owner or operator to educate users of such facilities on the proper methods for the recycling of electronic waste through written information and signs posted at the facility. This obligation also extends to private or municipal solid waste haulers/transporters. New York considers "users" to be residents, businesses, government entities, and waste haulers/transporters.
