EPA delays strontium drinking water rule

In a regulatory determination, the EPA says it will not issue national primary drinking water regulations (NPDWR) for four contaminants on its third contaminant candidate list and will also continue its review of data on a fifth contaminant, strontium (a naturally occurring element and an alkaline earth metal), before deciding if a national standard for that substance offers a meaningful opportunity to reduce risks to public health. Under a 1996 amendment to the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), the EPA must make regulatory determinations every 5 years on at least five unregulated contaminants.
