Numerous surveys of regional and global environmental history have been published recently, indicating the rapid maturing of the field; Simmons's study is equal to the best. The most ambitious in chronological scope is David Christian, Mapa of Time: An Introduction to Big History (California, 2004), which begins with a section on the origins of the universe, galaxies and the earth, and continues through the evolution of life in our biosphere to the present, all in 511 pages. This vast a perspective necessarily limits substance on modern history.
