Native Americans and the Environment: Perspectives on the Ecological Indian

This collection of essays is the result of the American Heritage Center's tenth annual symposium held at the University of Wyoming in 2002. Titled "Re-figuring the Ecological Indian," the conference was inspired by one of the most controversial books in the field of American Indian history in recent decades. Shepherd Krech's The Ecological Indian: Myth and Hutory (Norton, 2000) inspired a firestorm of debate upon publication at the end of the twentieth century. The resulting conference was an attempt to harness what had become a very emotional and contentious debate.
