In his last two books, Timothy Egan has turned previously plumbed historical stories into national best sellers. Making creative use of personal accounts of the Dust Bowl, Egan's The Worst Hard Times (Houghton Mifflin, 2005) won the National Book Award for nonfiction. The Big Burn surpasses the Dust Bowl narrative in capturing the essence of the great fires of 1910 in the Northern Rockies.
