As Frederick Davis argues in The Man Who Saved Sea TurtleA, natural history is a dying discipline. I appreciate the gravity of this point: my undergraduate mentor, John Goodman, was from the same dying breed of naturalists as the renowned University of Florida zoologist Archie Carr and as those who have been replaced by cell and molecular biologists. Naturalists-biologists who not only specialized in a specific field (Goodman in parasitology, Carr in herpetology)-understood the natural history of vertebrates, botany, ecology, evolutionary biology, and phyloge-netics and were experts in taxonomy and field identification.
