摘要

Megan Kate Nelson's Ruin Nation is one of several pioneering works uniting environmental and American Civil War history. This is the first book to investigate in detail the extent to which the Civil War destroyed natural and built environments. More importantly, it portrays how Americans-civilian and military, black and white-interacted with their created ruins during and after the war. Nelson's American Studies background facilitates the use of a vast and satisfying evidential base, made up of images, objects, and traditional written records, and enables her sophisticated argument: that Civil War ruins reflected multiple cultural meanings that proved savagely emotional and, oddly, transient.
