Kleingaertner, Newfield, Rossignol, and Wehner's Landscapes and Societies in Medieval Europe East of the Elbe (henceforth Landscapes and Societies), is a conference volume produced in association with the interdisciplinary project "Gentes trans Albiam-Europe East of the Elbe in the Middle Ages." The volume includes seventeen essays addressing the title subject through a range of historical and interdisciplinary approaches including material, economic, biological, political, cultural, and social analyses. With useful syntheses in the editors' introductory and concluding essays, Landscapes and Societies is an exemplary collection of medieval landscape case studies and a valuable illustration for medievalists of the growing importance of environmental and interdisciplinary approaches.
