So Excellent a Fishe: A Natural History of Sea Turtles

Archie Carr was one of the leading authorities on the ecology, migration, and conservation of sea turtles for much of his career at the University of Florida (1937-87). A prolific researcher and advocate, Carr was also a renowned writer of natural history essays and books. The University Press of Florida has done a service to those of us who appreciate natural history by reissuing Carr's best known works including two books on Central America, two on Africa, and now So Excellent a Fishe, one of the finest works about the natural history of sea turtles. I have argued elsewhere that Carr stood out from many of his peers in biology and ecology in that he recognized that sea turtles in the Caribbean and beyond coexisted with people and conservation measures needed to recognize the context of this relationship, particularly when the animal served as a natural resource.
