Over the past three decades, environmental history has grown exponentially, becoming, in Richard Unger's phrase, a "burgeoning beast." And like with any discipline experiencing growing pains, it has now come to a crossroads. What should be the direction of future research? What kind of image does it wish to project among historians and the population at large? How best can it contribute to a greater understanding of the historical past?
