Of the two handfuls of books on global environmental history, J. R. McNeill's and Erin Stewart Mauldin's.4 Companion to Global Environmental History is the most useful to date. Like any published work, it has gaps and flaws, but for anyone thinking about creating a course on global environmental history, or simply wanting to learn the field, right now this book should be the first read. Its twenty-nine essays are divided in four parts. The first, "Times," is better understood as "eras" that span deep time, the ancient world, the medieval world, and since the early modern period. The second section, "Places," contains regional and continental histories plus essays on the Soviet Union and United States, but it neglects a wide swath of the globe as well including a systematic analysis of Asia, China, or Europe. The third, awkwardly titled "Drivers of Change and Environmental Transformations," examines many of the standard themes in environmental history, while the last unit, "Environmental Thought and Action," surveys the literature on activism and thought. This organization of material, as I explain below, is one of the great strengths of the collection.
